Between Wrapport (allegedly) undermining Chicago Sun-Times; and a very tone-deaf, poorly researched Chicago Tribune editorial, another bit of Chicago media managed to slip past me completely. Late last week, Chicago Tribune Media Group decided to shutter 11 out of 16 print editions of TribLocal.

The Loop elevated 'L' train tracks have been a part of downtown Chicago since the 1890s. They became so iconic that when, in the 1970s, the CTA considered moving the tracks underground, there was public backlash. On Halloween, Wrapports sold off most Sun-Times Media newspapers to its biggest competitor - Chicago Tribune. I wrote about it at the time, and did a follow-up post a few days later. But, to sum it up, Wrapports wound up selling 32 weekly newspapers that make up Pioneer Press, as well as daily suburban newspapers that included Northwest Indiana's ( Read more... )

The news broke on December 23, but, for some reason, I managed to miss it until now.

The January 2015 issue of Today's Chicago Woman, which came out a day after Christmas, turned out to be its last. Founder and owner Sherren Leigh decided to shut down the magazine.

And honestly - I'm more than a little sad.

On October 31, Wrapports officially announced that it sold all of Sun-Times Media's suburban newspapers to its biggest competitor - Chicago Tribune. Earlier today, Dave McKinney, the well-respected journalist who has been covering state politics for the Chicago Sun-Times for the past 19 years, announced that he was quitting the newspaper.

We knew this was coming since the end of last year, but it has finally happened. Today, the spin-off of Tribune Company's newspapers and magazines officially went into effect.
